All students should have a school bag with them every day. Students must come to school fully equipped for their lessons. Please see below for the requirements of the equipment your child should bring to school.
Black or blue ball point pen x 2
Green ball point pen
Pencil
Ruler
Scientific Calculator*
Eraser
A suitable bag to carry books, full PE kit and equipment
A suitable reading book
Tutors will check students' essential equipment every morning to ensure they meet our minimum expectations. Students should talk to their teacher if they are unable to source essential equipment items. Detentions are issued when students forget essential items on repeated occasions.
Additional Items
Additional items such as a green pen, coloured pencil crayons and highlighters can aid both study skills and the presentation of work. However these items are not included in the essential item checks made by tutors.
Home Study - Taking books home:
At SBL Academy we pride ourselves on the high standard of Home Study that students complete and the way in which students develop as independent learners throughout their time with us. Part of being an effective independent learner involves taking books home in order to complete work and consolidate learning. We have found students complete Home Study to a much higher standard when they complete it in their books. On very rare occasions, students can then forget to bring their books to subsequent lessons which can lead to gaps in their written work and can disrupt their learning. We therefore issue detentions to any student who forgets to bring their correct book to more than one lesson in a week. It is important that students have a good size bag into which their books will fit (most are A4). As with other forms of school equipment, support may be available for students who need help to stay organised, We also have a small number of lockers available to students if they want to store some equipment in school.
We ask for your support to ensure that your child brings the correct books and equipment each day. We suggest having a school timetable on display and packing school bags the night before.
On-line study:
In September 2025 your child will be given their own school email account/address. They will need this to navigate any on-line study and to communicate with members of staff. Parents and carers are advised to regularly check internet and social media use of students.
*SBL Maths Department recommends a Casio FX-85GT CW calculator or Casio FX-83GT CW. Amazon links are below, but they are widely available on the high street, and in supermarkets.

Please note there are 'off brand' calculators (such as Osalo) that look similar but do not have the same functionality and so we do not recommend them.
